Mermaid Inn, hotel in Winchelsea

With Norman cellars dating back to the 12th century and secret passageways in some of its rooms, this inn offers historic accommodation in Rye.

The beautiful Mermaid Inn is in one of the prettiest streets in England. The rooms and beds were comfortable whilst retaining the history of the Inn and the Tudor Architecture. Friendly, helpful staff, happy to chat about the history of the Inn and surroundings. The Mermaid Inn is in the perfect location for exploring Rye, with St Mary's Church, the High Street and The Mint all close by. The Inn has the best Fireplace Bar with so much history, and there is so much to discover all over the inn. The narrow, steep stairs might be difficult for anyone with walking difficulties, but it is a joy to feel a part of the history of the place. And the breakfasts were exceptional, enjoyed in a gorgeous dining room. What a fabulous stay.

The question as put means our answer is rather misleading.

The question as put means our answer is rather misleading. We did not have time to explore Winchelsea as we would have liked, but spent much of our time in Rye, a quarter-hour drive away and with enough to keep us busy ind interested for two days. We only scratched the surface of the possibilities of the wider area. In Rye, park as soon as you can in any of the car-parks at the foot of the hill and walk. There is masses to see, but the one-way system within the town can be a nightmare to the unwary.

Winchelsea beach is a remote and beautiful coastline, perfect for November stormy weather. 20 mins away from Rye nature reserve and Petts Level cliffs. This is not in Winchelsea itself, but Winchelsea beach.

Beautiful, peaceful, historic town with strong local community feel, excellent to combine with exploring the rest of the area (Rye, Dungeness etc). Lovely place to spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the view over the surrounding countryside. Schedule visit with a date the cellar tours are on- we only found out about these after we visited!

The cottage is idyllic. It's actually very spacious and easily accommodated our family. The garden was the perfect place for an early morning coffee. Absolute bliss... no noise except for bird song and bees. The kitchen is wonderfully stocked - plenty quality pots, pans, etc. Everything is spotlessly clean. Winchelsea itself is an ideal base for some walking/running/swimming - the circular walk to Rye was an ideal way to sped Saturday morning. To top it all, the hosts left Easter eggs for us - what a kind gesture. THANK YOU.

Winchelsea Lodge was a joy to visit. The staff are beyond welcoming, the location. is perfect for Hastings, Battle, Rye and Camber and as for the breakfast, well this was outstanding, beautifully laid out and plenty of tasty local produce, in fact the sausages were the best we have ever had. Winchelsea is a beautiful small town with many lovely buildings. It looks idyllic. The church is the central focus of the town and is a must to visit. It is a stones throw from Rye and the nature reserve. There is a glorious walk from the house along the Military Canal to the sea and various paths around the Pett level.

Caravan was clean, spacious and equipped with everything we needed. We didn’t use any of the park facilities, but there was a fish and chip shop and a Co-Op next to the entrance. Pebbly beach nearby and Camber Sands only 20mins away.
